Wir ziehen weiter nach Norden, bis nach Idaho. Unser Ziel ist die "City of Rocks", keine Stadt im eigentlichen Sinne, dafür ein Eldorado für Felskletterer. Doch von solch waghalsigen Aktionen sehen wir ab, wir bleiben lieber auf den horizontalen Wegen mit nur gelegentlichen Klettereinlagen.
We are heading further northwards until we reach Idaho. Our destination is the "City of Rocks", not a real city but an eldorado for rock climbers instead. Rather than going for some foolhardy climbing excercises, we prefer the horizontal trials with only a few climbing intersections.
Die Shoshone Falls, oder auch die Niagara Fälle des Westens genannt, tauchen urplötzlich in der Prärie, nahe der Stadt Twin Falls, auf. Viele Pioniere und Trapper sind daher auch schlichtweg daran vorbeigezogen. Das Snake River fällt hier ca 70m in die Tiefe.
The Shoshone Falls, also called the Niagara Falls of the West, all of a sudden appear in the middle of the prarie near the town of Twin Falls. Many settlers and trappers simply missed the falls when they moved through the part of the country. The Snake River cascades 212 feet down from the rim of the canyon.
Wir durchqueren das Gebiet der "Tausend Quellen", wo das Wasser aus unzähligen Quellen aus den Canyonwänden des Snake River sprudelt.
We cross the Thousand Springs area, where waters from the Snake River Plain aquifer tumble from canyon walls.
Auf dem Weg zum Crater of the Moon National Monument, finden wir den perfekten Übernachtungsplatz am Little Wood River. Zeit für einen Sundowner!!
While on our way to the Crater of the Moon National Monument, we spot this perfect site for the night along the Little Wood River. Time for a sundowner!!
Crater of the Moon National Monument erhielt seinen Namen, weil die Oberfläche aus der Ferne wie die Mondoberfläche aussieht.
The Crater of the Moon National Monument obtained its name since its surface looks almost similar to that of the moon.
Die enormen Lavamengen sind nicht vulkanischen Ursprungs. Vor 15.000 Jahren brach die Erdkruste auf einer Länge von knapp 100 km auf, das Great Riff entstand, und ließ durch den Bruch bis noch vor etwas 2.000 Jahren gigantische Lavaströme austreten.
The vast volume of lava issued not from volcanoes but from a series of deep fissures. Beginning 15,000 years ago lava welled up creating the Great Rift. The most recent eruption occurred a mere 2,000 years ago.
Im Sawtooth National Forest wollten wir nochmal ausgiebig wandern gehen. Hmmmh...die Wanderwege und die Zufahrten sind alle noch eingeschneit, die Campingplätze geschlossen und vom Frühling keine Spur - obwohl wir bereits Anfang Mai haben!! Irgendwo unterwegs müssen wir wohl die Zugvögel überholt haben....?
We planned to go on some extensive hiking in the Sawtooth National Forest. Hmmmh...the trails and roads are all covered in snow, the camp grounds are closed and springs seems to be far away - even though we are already in early May!! Somehow we must have passed the snowbirds....?
Total hübsche Landschaft, aber uns ist es zu kalt. Statt der geplanten zwei Wochen bleiben wir nur zwei Tage. Wieder nach Süden zu fahren ist keine Option, da wir Mitte Mai von Montana nach Deutschland fliegen, also geht es weiter Richtung Norden. Wie sollte es auch anders sein: Montana empfängt uns mit Schnee!!
Awesome scenery, but it is too cold for us. Instead of staying here for the planned two weeks we only make two days. Heading back south is not an option, as we fly from Montana to Germany mid May. So, northwards is the way to go. And why should it be different: Montana welcomes us with snow!!
Wir verbringen die Zeit mit Freunden und Familie und entscheiden uns auch noch zum Sun River zu fahren...in der Hoffnung dort etwas Sonne zu finden.
We spend time with friends and family and decide to also drive to the Sun River... in the hope to find some sun.
Wir sind am Sun River. Ein Blick aus dem Fenster am nächsten Morgen verheißt nichts Gutes.

Unsere Heizung muss Überstunden leisten. Wir frühstücken erstmal gemütlich im Warmen.
Our heating system has to work a bit of overtime. We enjoy a cosy breakfast in the meantime.
Es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter, man (Udo) ist nur falsch angezogen. Wir müssen halt schnell genug laufen, dann wird uns schon warm! Immerhin haben wir noch acht Meilen, trockenen Fußes und ohne Frostbeulen, am See entlang geschafft.
There is actually no bad weather, you (Udo) is only incorrectly dressed. To get warm, we just have to hike a bit faster. Yes, we made our eight mile hike along the lake on dry feet and without any frostbites.
Pünktlich zum Sundowner lässt sich dann noch die Sonne blicken! Der Rotwein ist etwas zu kühl, aber wir genießen es trotzdem!
The sun pops out right in time for the sundowner. The redwine is probably too low temperatured, but we enjoy it anyway!
Vielleicht ist eine Reisepause in Nordamerika jetzt ganz gut, denn so können das sommerliche Wetter und vor allem die Temperaturen weiter nordwärts ziehen. Wir fliegen erstmal nach Deutschland und Namibia und melden uns Ende August wieder....
Perhaps a travel break in North America is a good idea now. This will give the weather a chance to get things sorted out. In the meantime we will fly to Germany and Namibia and return at the end of August...
