Vancouver BC bis Alaska
Entgegen unseren Gewohnheiten, alle Städte großräumig zu umfahren, planen wir dieses Mal einen mehrtägigen Aufenthalt in Vancouver ein. Dabei besuchen wir liebe Freunde, die uns ihre Stadt und Umgebung zeigen und uns mit wertvollen Tips versorgen.
Vancouver gefällt uns richtig gut mit seiner Lage am Meer, den Bergen im Hintergrund und den vorgelagerten Inseln. Wir genießen die entspannte Atmosphäre an der Waterfront, spazieren durch den Stanley Park, trödeln durch die Altstadt und erkunden Granville Island. Vom Grouse Mt und Lighthouse Park haben wir einen herrlichen Panoramablick auf die Skyline von Vancouver.
Contrary to our travel custom to avoid all cities, we decide to spend a couple of days in Vancouver. We visit good friends who show us around and provide us with great sightseeing tips.
With its close location to the sea, the mountains and surrounding islands, Vancouver really appeals to us. We enjoy the relaxed atmosphere at the waterfront, stroll along Stanley Park, dawdle around the old city and explore Granville Island. Grouse Mt and the Lighthouse Park offer great panoramic views of Vancouver Skyline.
"Aquabus" und Wasserflugzeug sind für uns ein ungewohnter Anblick, gehören hier aber zu den alltäglichen Verkehrsmitteln.
We are rather unfamiliar with "Aquabus" and seaplanes, here however, these are used as part of daily transportation.
Bevor wir die Region Vancouver wieder verlassen, schauen wir noch bei Hans vorbei, Unimog Händler bei Langley. Unser Fahrzeug hat die ein oder andere Reparatur nötig. Nichts dramatisches, aber wie immer dauert so etwas länger als geplant. Doch mit Hans's kompetenter und netter Hilfe sind wir drei Tage später wieder unterwegs.
Before we leave Vancouver region, we stop at Hans`, Unimog Dealer near Langley. Our rig needs the odd repair. Nothing serious, but as usual, it takes longer than expected. After three days of his (Hans) competent and great help, we are on the road again.

"Sea to Sky" - das klingt gut, wir entscheiden uns für diese Route. So heißt die Straße die von Vancouver hinauf in die Berge führt.
"Sea to Sky" - sounds great and so we decide to take this route. It is the road leading from Vancouver to the mountains.
Am Callaghan Lake kommen wir der Schneegrenze zu nahe. Wir wollen wandern gehen, doch nach einer halben Stunde durch Matsch und Schnee brechen wir die Aktion wieder ab. Stattdessen laden wir unser Kayak ab und genießen die Bergkulisse vom See aus.
We get too close to the snowline at Callaghan Lake. We planned to go hiking, but, after half an hour through snow and mud, we decide to turn around. We unload our kayak and enjoy the scenery from the lake instead.
Kanada feiert dieses Jahr den 150 sten Geburtstag und wir sind zufällig in Whistler. In 2010 wurden hier die olympischen Winterspiele ausgetragen. Die Stadt ist hübsch, doch an diesem Feiertag Anfang Juli für uns eindeutig zu voll. Dann hören wir Dudelsackspieler in schottischer Tracht, - ach ja - Kanada's Staatsoberhaupt ist immer noch die englische Queen. Jetzt suchen wir das Weite!!
This year Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary and coincidentally we are in Whistler. The olympic winter games were hosted here in 2010. The town is beautiful, however, on this anniversary day in early Juli, too crowded for us. Then we hear bagpipers in Scotish costumes - oh yes - Canada's head of state is still the Queen of England. Now it's time to leave!!
Den Nachmittag verbringen wir dann im Joffre Lakes Provincial Park. Was für ein Gegensatz. An dem höchsten der drei Seen angekommen werden wir für den anstrengenden Aufstieg mehr als belohnt. Lange bewundern wir dieses Bilderbuch Panorama.
We spend the afternoon at Joffre Lake PP. What a contrast. The view from the highest of the three lakes compensates the strenuous ascent. We greatly adore the stunning panoramic vista.
Wir folgen dem Verlauf des Fraser Rivers bis Prince George mit einem Abstecher zur historischen Goldgräberstadt Barkerville. Zu Zeiten des "Goldrush" um 1860 lebten hier mehrere tausend Einwohner, heute ist es eine liebevoll restaurierte Museumsstadt. Wir bekommen einen guten Eindruck von dem entbehrsamen Leben der Goldsucher.
We follow the Fraser River to Prince George with a detour to the historic gold mining town of Barkerville. During the 1860s, at the time of the gold rush, a couple thousand people lived here. Today one can visit the restored heritage buildings. We get a fairly good impression of the rough life of the gold miners at the time.
Ab Prince George folgen wir dem Yellowhead Hwy und weiter den Steward Cassiar Hwy, durch Farmland, durch Wälder und Wälder und noch mehr Wälder und an unzähligen Seen vorbei. Besonders imposant fanden wir den Gebirgszug der "Seven Sisters". Ein idealer Platz zum Übernachten.
From Prince George we follow the Yellowhead Hwy then on to the Steward Cassiar Hwy, past ranches and forests and forests and more forests as well as uncountable lakes. We find the mountain range of the Seven Sisters particularly impressive. An ideal place to camp overnight.
Eine Besonderheit entlang dieser Strecke ist der Salmon Gletscher. Wir haben riesiges Glück mit dem Wetter, gegen Abend kommt sogar die Sonne noch zum Vorschein und wir können die Ausmaße des Gletscher in vollem Umfang bewundern.
One of the highlights along this stretch is Salmon Glacier. We are lucky, the weather turns good and the sun comes out just before dusk. We adore the glacier at its full size.
Es ist so schön, hier bleiben wir gleich zum Übernachten stehen, mit dem Gletscher sozusagen vor der Haustür.
It is just great, so we stay here for the night with the glacier at our doorstep.
Wie sehr wir bis jetzt Glück mit dem Wetter hatten, beweisen uns die nächsten Tage. Der kanadische Regen kann sehr ausdauernd sein.
As we come to experience the following days, so far we were pretty lucky with the weather. The rain in Canada can be quite enduring.

Weiter hängen die Berge in den Wolken. Wir fahren durch großartige Landschaft - laut Reiseführer - und sehen sie kaum.
The mountain ranges are covered by clouds. We drive through beautiful scenery - according to the travel guide books - but we hardly see it.
Beim Bau des Alaska Hwy 1942 durch das US Militär nagelte ein von Heimweh geplagter Soldat ein Schild seines Heimatortes an einen Pfosten. Mehr als 72.000 Schilder später wächst der Schilderwald in Watson Lake auch heute noch weiter.
In 1942, during the construction of the Alaska Hwy by the US Military, a homesick soldier pinned a sign of his hometown on a pole. More than 72,000 signs later, the sign post forest in Watson Lake still keeps growing.
Wir biegen vom Alaska Hwy ab in Richtung Skagway. Eine urige kleine Küstengemeinde, wenn nur die vielen tausend Touristen nicht wären, die im Sommer täglich von den Kreuzfahrtschiffe strömen!
We leave the Alaska Hwy and head towards Skagway. A nice little coastal town, if it wasn't for the thousands of tourists that flock from the cruise ships every day during summer!
Wir buchen keine Kreuzfahrt, sondern nehmen die Fähre durch den Fjord nach Haines.
We don't book a cruise, but instead take the ferry through the fiord to Haines.
Ab Haines haben wir keine große Routenauswahl. Es gibt nur eine Straße und die führt weiter nördlich auf den Alaska Hwy zurück, vorbei am Kluane National Park.
From Haines onwards, we don't really have a choice of route. There is only one road which connects further north to the Alaska Hwy, passing Kluane National Park.
Zur Abwechslung läuft uns dieser Schwarzbär vor die Kamera.

An Wandermöglichkeiten mangelt es hier nicht, eher am geeigneten Wetter. Doch wir haben Glück, die Wolkendecke lichtet sich und wir können wenigstens für einen Tag die Bergwelt und mal wieder die "Vogelperspektive" zu Fuß erleben.
There is no shortage of hiking trails, it is rather a question of finding suitable weather. But we are lucky, the clouds dissolve and we enjoy, for at least one day, a hike which offers birds eye perspective.
Nach ca 3.000 km durch British Columbia und das Yukon Territory in nur vier Wochen, das ist nicht unsere normale Reisegeschwindigkeit, erreichen wir Alaska.
After four weeks and approx.1,800 miles through British Columbia and Yukon Territory - this is not our normal travel pace - we reach Alaska.
Wir sind im Februar 2015 in Panama in Richtung Norden gestartet und seit 2 1/2 Jahren "on the road"! nach ca 65.000 km - fast 1 1/2 mal um die Welt - sind wir in Alaska angekommen! Laut Google Maps sind es nur ca 11.000 km. Wo sind wir eigentlich die ganze Zeit rumgekurvt?
In February 2015 we started our journey in Panama, heading north. After 2 1/2 years "on the road" and covering approx. 40,000 miles - roughly 1 1/2 times around the world - we arrive in Alaska! Google maps estimates the distance at 6,875 miles. Where did we all go!
