Vancouver Island

Die Fährfahrt von Vancouver nach Vancouver Island dauert 1 1/2 Stunden, bei Sonnenschein sicher hübscher als bei diesen tiefhängenden Wolken.

Vancouver Island ist ungefähr so groß wie Belgien, 450 km lang und rund 100 km breit. Ein Gebirgszug, längs durch die Insel verlaufend, teilt sie in zwei mikroklimatische Zonen - die regenreiche und oft stürmische Pazifikküste sowie die gemäßigte ruhigere Osthälfte, durch den Regenschatten mit geringeren Niederschlägen. Die ganze Insel ist durch dichten gemäßigten Küstenregenwald geprägt.

The ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island takes 1 1/2 hours, with sunshine probably more beautiful than with thick clouds.

Vancouver Island approximates the size of Belgium, 280 miles long and 60 miles in width. An extensive mountain range  divides the island into two micro climate zones - the rainy and often storm ridden Pacific coast and the moderate and calmer eastern half protected by the rain shadow with lower precipitation. The whole island, however, is pretty much covered by dense coastal rain forest.

Auf der Insel war und ist, wenn auch heute in geringerem Maße, die Holzwirtschaft ein bedeutender Wirtschaftsfaktor. Während der Krise in der Holzindustrie, Ende der 70iger Jahre, sah man sich vielerorts gezwungen andere Wirtschaftszweige zu fördern. Der kleine Ort Chemainus ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür, wie das durch kreative Ideen wirkungsvoll umgesetzt wurde. Man lud Künstler ein, die auf Häuserfassaden die Siedlungsgeschichte des Ortes in großen Wandmalereien thematisierten. So entstand eine Open-Air-Galerie, die heute viele Touristen anzieht.

Forestry was, and to some extend still is, the principal industry on Vancouver Island. However, as the resource economy faltered towards the end of the 1970s, townspeople were forced to look to economic diversification as a way for the community to thrive. The small town of Chemainus is a good example of how this conversion was achieved by creative ideas. Artists were invited and murals reflecting the stories of the early settlement were painted on house facades. The resulting open-air art gallery draws visitors from all over the world-

Wir fahren weiter bis Victoria - die Hauptstadt der Provinz British Columbia - am südlichen Ende der Insel gelegen.

Wir wollen unsere Fitness wieder auf Vordermann bringen bevor Tanja kommt und nutzen die vorhandenen Möglichkeiten für Tageswanderungen, wobei es eine Herausforderung ist, bei der waldreichen Vegetation schöne Wanderwege mit Aussicht zu finden.

We keep going to Victoria - the capital of the province of British Columbia - located at the south end of the island.

We have to get our fitness in shape before Tanja arrives and explore hiking possibilities where ever available. It, however, turns out to be quite a challenge to find nice hiking trails in the dense vegetation with splendid views.

Absolut empfehlenswert ist ein Besuch der Butchart Gardens bei Victoria. Wir sind fasziniert von der schönen Gartenanlage, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, aus was sie vor über 100 Jahren entstanden ist. Es begann mit einer Idee von Jennie Butchart, einen ausgedienten Steinbruch zu verschönern, der die Zementfabrik ihres Ehemanns beliefert hatte.  

A must visit are Butchart Gardens near Victoria. Absolutely fascinating setup, especially when looking back as to how it evolved 100 years ago. It began from an idea Jennie Butchart had to beautify the worked-out limestone quarry which had supplied her husband cement plant.

Victoria wurde 1843 als Pelzhandelsposten von der Hudson Bay Company gegründet und nach der britischen Königin Victoria benannt. Der britische Einschlag ist deutlich erkennbar - oder wo sonst gibt es noch die typischen "Schiebefenster"? Die Lage am Wasser, mit Hausbooten und Musikern gibt der Stadt einen netten Flair. Architektonisch sticht das Parlamentsgebäude im neobarocken Stil von 1898 hervor.

Victoria was founded in 1843 as a fir trading post by the Hudson Bay Company and named after the british Queen Victoria. The british heritage is still clearly visible - where else would you still find the typical "sliding window frames"? Its location at the waterfront, with the house-boats and musicians gives it a charming flair. The neo baroque Parlament building is an architectural highlight.

Ein abwechslungsreicher Wanderweg ist der 20 km lange Coast Trail entlang der Südküste. Besonders fotogen finden wir die Arbutosbäume mit ihrem orange - braunem Stamm, die angeblich nur in dieser Gegend vorkommen.

A rather diverse hiking trail is the 12 mile long Coast Trail along the southern coast. We find the Arbutos trees with ist orange-brown trunks quite photogenic. They apparently only grow in this area.

Von hier aus fahren wir Richtung Norden nach Denman Island, einer vorgelagerten Insel im Osten von Vancouver Island und besuchen Ron und Linda. Vielen Dank für eure nette Gastfreundschaft, den schönen Tagesausflug nach Sandy Island und die vielen wertvollen Tips für den Nordteil der Insel. Völlig begeistert sind wir von den zahlreichen Fischadlern, die wir hier sehen.

From here we are headed northwards to Denman Island, an island located east of Vancouver Island, and visit Ron and Linda. Thank you for your great hospitality, the beautiful daytrip to Sandy Island and the many useful tips for our travel to the northern part of the island. Also, we are really impressed and glad to seeing so many bald eagles on Denman Island.

Wir folgen Ron's Tips auf den abgelegenen und sich verzweigenden Waldwegen in den weniger erschlossenen nördlichen Teil von Vancouver Island.

We follow Ron's tips on remote and branching forest roads on the less developed northern part of Vancouver Island.

Hier oben sind mehr Schwarzbären als Menschen unterwegs. Diese Bärin mit ihren zwei Kleinen scheint sich an unserer Präsenz nicht im Geringsten zu stören. Sie schlendern in aller Ruhe in ca fünf Meter Entfernung an uns vorbei, derweil wir beim Frühstück in unserem Camper sitzen.

It seems though up here more black bears than humans are on the roads. This she-bear with her two little cubs didn't even take notice of our presence. As they stroll past in approx. 15 feet distance we sit in our camper enjoying our breakfast and obviously the wildlife experience.

Dank der genauen Routenbeschreibung haben wir traumhaft schöne und einsame Plätze gefunden, so wie diese Bucht!!

Thanks to a perfect route description we find "Ron's bay", a secluded and gorgeous spot!!

Dazu haben wir riesen Glück mit dem Wetter - das ist nicht immer auf der Insel garantiert!! Und so bleiben wir ein paar Tage. Das ruhige Wasser lädt zum Kajak fahren ein und wir probieren mal wieder unser Angelglück - diesmal haben wir uns tatsächlich zwei Fische zum Abendessen gefangen. Keine Ahnung was das für Fische waren - haben aber lecker geschmeckt!

Oh, we are so lucky with the weather - not guaranteed on this Island!! We decide to stay here for some days. The calm waters are ideal for kayaking and we try once more our fishing luck - yep, this time we catch two fish for a dinner. No clue which fish we caught, but they taste very good!

San Josef's Bay hat einen schönen Sandstrand und interessante Felsformationen, die man nur bei Ebbe erreichen kann. Es ist jedoch ratsam die Flut im Auge zu behalten, sonst riskiert man auf dem Rückweg nasse Hosen.

San Josef's Bay has a beautiful beach and some interesting rock formations, where the latter are only reachable during low tide. It is advisable to keep a close eye on the high tide to not risk wet trousers on your way back.

Dafür haben wir oberhalb von Grant Bay, auf einer abgeholzten freien Fläche, einen Übernachtungsplatz mit bester Aussicht gefunden. Um die Schräglage auszugleichen, mussten wir ein bisschen improvisieren - Unterlegmaterial und "Treppenverlängerung" gab es ja genug!

We find a perfect spot to camp on a logged area with a great view on Grant Bay. We have to improvise a bit to level out the uphill position - there are plenty of levelling pieces and "staircase extensions" around.

Zum Glück sind wir an diesem Morgen spät dran. Eigentlich wollten wir weiterfahren, doch im Laufe des Vormittages wird das Wetter immer besser. Wir haben ja Zeit und verschieben die Abfahrt auf morgen. Stattdessen genießen wir den Tag am Strand!

Fortunately we aren't up that early the next morning. We planned to leave, however, as the day moved on, the weather changed to the better. Well, we are in no hurry and so we decide to postpone our departure by one day. Instead we enjoy the day at the beach!

Zum Schluss unserer Zeit auf Vancouver Island wollen wir noch, auf mehrfache Empfehlung, nach Tofino und Ucluelet. Unterwegs legen wir eine Pause beim Old Country Market in Coombs ein. Witzig und genial finden wir diese umweltbewusste und platzsparende Idee - unten Laden und Restaurant, auf dem Dach Ziegenweide!

Following many recommendations, we decide to spend the our last days of our time on Vancouver Island at Tofino and Ucluelet. Enroute, we stop over at the Old Country market in Coombs. We really like the brilliant and funny environmentally friendly and space saving idea - beneath shop and restaurant, on the roof the coat pasture!

Bei Ucluelet genießen wir den sonnigen Tag und bummeln den schön angelegten Wild Pacific Trail mit seinen vielen Aussichtspunkten entlang.

We enjoy the sunny day near Ucluelet and stroll along the beautifully laid out Wild Pacific Trail with its many view points.

Wer so viel unterwegs ist, wird auch hungrig. Die Beeren, die überall am Waldrand wachsen, sind gerade reif. Diese leckeren Salmon Berries sind eine willkommene Bereicherung für unser Frühstück. Übrigens, die Bären mögen sie auch - es sind aber genug für alle da. Wir hoffen, dass der Bär das auch weiß !

When you are out and about so much, you get hungry. The berries, which grow all along the forests, are currently ripe. These tasty Salmon Berries are a welcoming add on to our breakfast. By the way, the bears like the berries too - there is, however, enough for everybody. We trust that the bear realizes this as well!

Long Beach bei Tofino lädt zum ausgedehnten Strandspaziergang und zum Surfen ein. Wir entscheiden uns für Ersteres und bleiben dem kalten Wasser des Pazifiks lieber fern.

Long Beach near Tofino is ideal for extended strolls and surfing. We choose the former and stay away from the cold waters of the Pacific.

Die schönen Naturerlebnisse der letzten vier Wochen werden uns bestimmt lange in Erinnerung bleiben, auch wenn das Wetter recht wechselhaft war. Denn natürlich hat es  einen Grund, warum der Regenwald auf Vancouver Island so gut gedeiht. Regen - ist aber nicht so fotogen!

We will remember the great natural experiences of the last four weeks, even though the weather was ever changing. There is an obvious reason why the rainforest grows so well on Vancouver Island! Rain - but it is not so photogenic!
